So Cal Re-chromer

RobbiQuest or anyone in So Cal,
A couple of weeks ago you responded to me about a yellow 'C' model that I want to buy (still in the process as the seller and I have conflicting schedules). Right now I'm trying to figure out what it's going to run me to re-chrome all the handles, and re-porcelain the burners (definitely needed). I found a local place online in Montclair (antiquegasstoves.com) and wondered if you had used them, or if you have another place you have used that is pretty close. I haven't received a response on their pricing yet, and I'm crossing my fingers that I don't have to take out a second mortgage or sell one of my children just to get my shiny handles (love those shiny handles). Georgy, I can save you the wait. I have the pricing they sent me. FUGGEDABOUDIT!!!!

Burner handles - $50 ea
Thumb latches - $25 ea
Pilot cover - $45 ea
Stove top - they forgot to get me that price. And, after looking at their other prices, I'm not too terribly concerned! SHEEEEEEEEEEEEESH!

You might want to contact Robbies Hobbies in Wichita. Gene quoted me approx $200 for all pieces, including the top! Yes, the shipping will cost but, you're still gonna come out WAY cheaper.

Hi Georgi,

For reporcelaining, you will want to go directly to Gigi's (in Long Beach). She is the one who actually does the reporcelaining - many places (like the folks in Montclair) are just the middleman and will add their mark-up and send to Gigi for the actual work. Gigi is very affordable. You can get her website (that has her phone number) from this page:

As to rechroming, any biker shop can do a good job on the handles. I used a place in Long Beach. They are very good, but lousy about shipping (so you'd want to make a trip there, if you can.) I'll e-mail it to you off-line, if interested.

The Long Beach chromer charged me $5 each for smaller the gas knobs, and $10 each for the bigger griddle handle. I think I paid $35 for each oven rack. See the racks here (very shiny!):

Fatfutures: Regarding the place in Montclair and thier prices ... AGHHH! I WILL have to sell a child to get my shiny handles and porcelain($450 just for the chrome top? Holy Smokes, Batman). Since I'm kind of fond of my kids I think Gigi's is the next step. I saw your photos, very bee-u-tee-ful. By the way, did I see a before picture side shot of your T-well pot? Is she doing something fun to that too?
Robbiquest, yes I would love the Long Beach chrome shops number. There's actually a business closer to me, but the Montclair website freaked me out about going to a place that doesn't 'specialize' in stove restoration (warping was mentioned, and that sent a chill up my spine). So I think I'd rather drive out to Long Beach since they've already worked on at least one stove (yours).
p.s. Re message board etiquette, am I supposed to sign this 'lablover',sign my name, or just slap on an initial? Don't want to commit any faux 'paws' (sorry, I couldn't resist).

First of all, Georgy... you just go ahead and sign anyway you want! I don't think we're that concerned with that level of etiquette. At least, I sure HOPE we're not!

My thermowell... Well now, I have adopted what the "Oatmeal People" might consider the red-haired stepchild in the Chambers family. What does that mean? My Beast has no Thermowell.

You MUST do your grates and burners at GiGi's! Most likely, when you take them to her, she will simply exchange them for pieces she has already re-done. And, as Robbi said, it's highly likely that the folks in Montclair send their pieces to Gigi and charge you their mark up.

Gigi suggests using a place in long beach,i believe it is called "dave's". i went there, it is primarily a biker shoop but the guys were very cool and not at all expensive. gigi is THE porcelain source and all of the california stove people use her. places like stove heaven in los angeles triple gigi's prices for the porcelain work. meanwhile, in detroit, trying to find someone to chrome the top for less than 600 dollars !!!!!! is impossible. all the chrome shops here are setup for automotive and laugh at the stove top. i'm sending mine to gene at robbies hobbies this week.
